3D printer manufacturer 3D Systems has taken part in a $17.6m series B round for Onkos Surgical, a US-based medical technology producer focused on surgical oncology.
The round was led by venture capital firm Canaan Partners and included 1315 Capital, the VC firm that led a series A round of undisclosed size for Onkos in 2015. 3D Systems’ participation was not disclosed at the time but the corporate was listed as a returning investor in the latest press release.
Founded in 2015, Onkos is developing products to facilitate the surgical treatment of cancer. The company relies on 3D scanning and printing to produce models of tumours and creates personalised implant, instrument and anatomic model designs to support surgeons.
The series B capital will go towards an expansion of the company’s sales, marketing and research and development activities. Stephen Bloch, general partner at Canaan, will join its board of directors.
Patrick Treacy, chief executive and co-founder of Onkos Surgical, said: “The combined intellectual capital and operating experience that Canaan Partners, 1315 Capital and 3D Systems provides to our leadership team will enable us to scale our business rapidly and efficiently.”
