OpenSignal picks up $8m

UK-based mobile connectivity analytics provider OpenSignal has raised $8m in an oversubscribed series B round featuring subsidiaries of mobile chipset maker Qualcomm and publisher O’Reilly Media.

Qualcomm Ventures and O’Reilly AlphaTech Ventures were joined by Octopus Ventures, which led the round, and fellow venture capital firm Passion Capital.

OpenSignal’s platform evaluates the speed and quality of mobile phone connections for the benefit of service providers, industry regulators, market analysts and broadband customers. The company compiles sector reports and coverage maps for mobile connectivity in several countries.

Brendan Gill, co-founder and chief executive of OpenSignal, told TechCrunch the funding would be used to develop new analytics products based on data OpenSignal has already collected.

Qualcomm Ventures, O’Reilly AlphaTech and Passion Capital all contributed to OpenSignal’s $1.3m seed round in 2012 before coming back for its $4m series A two years later.
