Data storage technology provider Western Digital exited US-based file sharing service provider Hightail today in an acquisition of undisclosed size by enterprise software producer OpenText.
Founded in 2004 as YouSendIt, Hightail operates a cloud-based freemium service that enables users to securely share files with each other that are too large for email.
The company has also launched a platform targeted at creative professionals to facilitate collaborations and feedback. It has 5.5 million paying customers and had more than 50 million users as of late 2015.
Hightail’s offering will be integrated into OpenText’s product suite and further developed. It had raised $83m in funding, most recently securing $34m in a 2013 series E round led by Western Digital Capital, the corporate venture capital arm of Western Digital.
The series E round included Accolade Partners, Alloy Ventures, Sevin Rosen Funds, Emergence Capital, Adams Street Partners and Sigma Partners, and Cambrian Ventures was also among Hightail’s shareholders.
OpenText CEO Mark J. Barrenechea said: “The acquisition of Hightail underscores our commitment to delivering differentiated content solutions in the cloud that enable marketers and creative professionals to share, produce and securely collaborate on digital content.”
