US-based cloud computing platform company Engine Yard has acquired Ireland-based rival company Orchestra for an undisclosed amount.
One of Engine Yard’s key investors is online retailer Amazon, which contributed to both Engine Yard’s $15m series B round, in July 2008 and its $19m series C round, in October 2009.
Engine Yard’s other key investors are venture capital firms DAG Ventures, New Enterprise Associates, Presidio Ventures, Bay Partners and Benchmark Capital, which also funded Engine Yard’s January 2008 series A round to the tune of $3.5m. The two companies are platform as a service companies, which develop web-based platforms for other companies to use.
John Dillon, chief executive officer of Engine Yard, said: "The Engine Yard PaaS is the leading choice for development teams that need to build highly reliable, scalable Ruby on Rails applications because we deliver deep expertise, a curated stack, and expert support services."
He added: "Engine Yard has powered some of the fastest growing businesses in history. With Orchestra and its team of dedicated PHP [a web development language] contributors joining Engine Yard, we’re extending our platform into an adjacent market to help PHP developers achieve the same success."
