Origin Wireless, a US-based developer of motion-sensing technology, received $14m on Wednesday from investors including home security technology producer Alarm.com and Verizon Ventures, the investment arm of telecommunications company Verizon.
Founded in 2013, Origin is developing a software platform that applies wifi technology to detecting the movement of human beings, for purposes such as detecting home intruders or the breathing of a baby.
Ray Liu, founder and CEO of Origin, said the proceeds from the round will go toward the commercialisation of its products and services. It had raised $10.6m from undisclosed investors in October 2019, according to a regulatory filing.
Unnamed backers had provided $7.7m for the company in June 2018, after it had raised $1.3m the previous month, according to additional filings.
Mirai Creation Fund, an investment vehicle managed by asset manager Sparx Group and backed by car manufacturer Toyota and financial services firm Sumitomo Mitsui Banking Corporation, lists Origin among its portfolio companies.
