3M New Ventures, the corporate venturing unit of US-based conglomerate 3M, invested an undisclosed amount in US-based LCD screen designer Pixel Qi, as part of its series B round.
Pixel Qi’s series A round took place in March 2009, though neither the amount of capital nor the identity of the investors has been revealed.
The LCD screens developed by Pixel Qi are designed to solve the conventional problems of LCD screens, and retain high quality in sunlight while granting an improved battery life. Pixel Qi, which operates in both the US and Taiwan, plans to use the investment to expand its engineering and sales capability.
Stefan Gabriel, president of 3M New Ventures, said: "Pixel Qi’s technology enables displays of such [low] power and high usability that the vision of ubiquitous displays comes much closer to realisation. In combining Pixel Qi’s disruptive display technology with our technology platforms, we can create new business opportunities in the consumer and commercial markets for 3M."
