Jim Gable is president of Chevron Technology Ventures (CTV), the corporate venture arm of US-based oil and gas corporation Chevron.

Gable manages a team of 60, of whom 14 work on making investments, while 28 work on connecting portfolio startups with the company. CTV tends to hire staff internally to further exploit the already established institutional knowledge and relationships in the business.

Gable has had a more than 20-year career at Chevron. He started as managing executive of venture capital from 2003 to 2007, before moving out of corporate venture capital and working as the corporation’s general manager of value chain optimisation and leading mergers and acquisitions. He came back to lead the corporate venture unit two years ago and was recognised on the GCV Powerlist last year.

“CTV was founded in 1999 and has invested in more than 197 startups. It currently has around 60 companies in its portfolio”

CTV was founded in 1999 and has invested in more than 197 startups over the years. It currently has around 60 companies in its portfolio including Sea Machines, a US-based developer of autonomous maritime vessel management systems, which raised $12m in February.

In addition, the firm has overseen more than 70 exits. Among the most recent was Silixa, a UK-based provider of fibre optic-powered data services, which was acquired by Luna Innovations in 2023.

In April, CTV launched its third $500m fund, which invests in renewable energy technologies. The fund, Future Energy Fund III, will focus on startups in the industrial decarbonisation and circular carbon economy.

Gable is particularly interested in technologies that meet society’s decarbonisation targets more quickly. He sees vast potential in blue hydrogen technology, saying that these forms of technologies can meet near-term carbon reduction goals.

Gable has a degree in material science and engineering from Lehigh University and a master’s in business administration from the University of Virginia Darden School of Business.
