US-based multi-player game developer Proletariat has closed a $20m series C round led by video game producer Take-Two Interactive Software.
Venture capital firms Spark Capital and FirstMark Capital also participated in the round, having already contributed to a $6m series A round together with Atlas Venture in 2015. Undisclosed investors had supplied $2.25m in seed funding for the company in 2013.
Founded in 2012, Proletariat specialises in multiplayer mobile games. Its debut title, a real-time team strategy game called World Zombination, was released in 2015, and it has since produced arena game Streamline and StreamLegends, a role-playing game extension for streaming platform Twitch.
The series C funding will support work on Spellbreak, an RPG currently in closed beta that is due for release in early 2020. Michael Worosz, head of corporate development and independent publishing for Take-Two Interactive, will take a board seat at Proletariat.
Proletariat chief executive Seth Sivak said: “We have been looking for the right industry leaders to work with to help us take Spellbreak and Proletariat to the next level.
“Michael and Take-Two bring a wealth of experience that will be vital as we expand the team, ramp up development and prepare to self-publish Spellbreak next year for audiences around the world.”
