Rakuten goes for another ride on Carousell

Carousell, the Singapore-based developer of a mobile marketplace app, raised $6m in a series A round on Wednesday that featured Rakuten Ventures, e-commerce company Rakuten’s corporate venturing fund.

Venture capital firm Sequoia Capital led the round, while Golden Gate Ventures, 500 Startups and angel investor Darius Cheung also participated. Rakuten Ventures led Carousell’s $800,000 seed round in November 2013, in which Golden Gate, 500 Startups and Cheung all invested.

Carousell’s app enables users to list items for sale, uploading a photo in the process. They can also interact with prospective buyers through the app’s private chat messenger.

The cash will be used to accelerate Carousell’s geographic expansion across the Asia-Pacific region, with Malaysia, Indonesia and Taiwan set to be its next ports of call.
