RapidSOS raids corporates for $30m

US-based emergency contact technology developer RapidSOS secured $30m on Tuesday in a series B round featuring insurance group CSAA and M12, the corporate venturing vehicle for software provider Microsoft.

Venture capital fund Playground Global led the round, which included Highland Capital Partners, Two Sigma Ventures, Forte Ventures, Westly Group and private investors including Ralph de la Vega.

RapidSOS has developed technology that transfers data from mobile devices to emergency services first responders in order to help them provide assistance.

The round boosted the company’s overall funding to $65m, $16m of which came in an April 2018 round led by Highland Capital and backed by CSAA and M12 (then still known as Microsoft Ventures).

The company’s other investors include Motorola Solutions Venture Capital and A3 Ventures, subsidiaries of communications technology provider Motorola Solutions and motor club AAA, both of which invested in its $14m series A round in April 2017.

The 2017 round was led by existing investor Highland Capital and also featured Westly Group, Two Sigma Ventures, Responder Ventures and assorted angel investors.

Michael Martin, chief executive of RapidSOS, said: “America’s 911 telecommunicators do heroic work managing over 240 million emergencies annually through outdated infrastructure that allows little more than a voice connection.

“We spent the past five years partnering with public safety to transform that voice-only system into a rich data platform. I am excited to continue our mission of providing lifesaving data for every emergency globally.”
