Reflexion radiates promise for Pfizer

US-based medical device manufacturer Reflexion Medical has raised $11.6m in a series A round led by France-based venture capital firm Sofinnova Partners.

The round also included Pfizer Venture Investments, the venture capital arm of pharmaceutical company Pfizer, and Venrock, the venture capital arm of the Rockefeller family, which has previously invested in technology companies such as Apple and Intel.

In conjunction with the funding, Reflexion’s board will be joined by Bill Burkoth from Pfizer Ventures, Antoine Papiernik from Sofinnova Partners and Colin Cahill from Venrock.

Reflexion will be using the funding to expand its R&D organisation and accelerate its development of the first biologically guided radiation therapy system, a technology which will potentially be able to treat later-stage patients with highly focused radiation.

Jay Watkins, chairman of Reflexion Medical, said: “Having worked closely with the founders over the past several years, I am pleased to welcome the support and combined expertise of Sofinnova Partners, Venrock and PVI as we continue to build a company which hopes to change the paradigm for cancer treatment.”
