Remezcla finds Hemisphere to raise $11m

US-based digital media company Remezcla has raised $11m in a series A round that included a $5m investment by Latin-focused broadcaster Hemisphere Media Group.

Macro Ventures, a media startup that creates content for African American, Latin and multicultural audiences, also participated in the round, as did angel investor Patrick Yee.

Founded in 2006 and bootstrapped until now, Remezcla has built a Latin youth-focused media brand that claims an audience of 40 million. It operates an online media platform together with an advertising agency and an entertainment offering.

The series A capital will be used to expand the company’s video content, and in particular to expand its video production facilities in Brooklyn, New York.

Remezcla aims to produce a range of content, from short-form social media videos to long-form, episodic programming spanning culture, music, cinema, sports and food.

Alan J. Sokol, Hemisphere’s president and chief executive, said: “With a proven track record of developing compelling original content, Remezcla has positioned itself as the most influential Latino youth media brand poised to lead and disrupt the market.

Macro Ventures founder and CEO Charles D. King added: “Macro Ventures prides itself on making investments that align with our mission to shape culture on a global level with content that more accurately portrays our diverse and dynamic world.

“Remezcla is one of those special brands that we believe will play an integral role in leading Latino media into the future.”
