Revolution Analytics, a US-based provider of software and support for the open-source R statistics language previously backed by Intel Capital, has raised $8.6m from 10 investors, according to a regulatory filing.
In October last year, Revolution Analytics (which was then known as REvolution Computing) raised $9m from Intel Capital, the corporate venturing division of semiconductor company Intel, and venture capital firm North Bridge Venture Partners as well as hire Norman Nie as chief executive.
At that time, Lisa Lambert, managing director at Intel Capital, said: "Intel Capital’s original 2007 investment in REvolution Computing was based on the realisation that R has the potential to become the future analytics engine for many of Intel’s key financial services, healthcare and energy customers."
Intel Capital, has had a long history of investment in open source enterprises, beginning in 1998 with its investment in Red Hat, and invested in Revolution’s series A round that was announced in January 2008.
Revolution was made from Intel’s Open Source Incubator Program founded in January 2006 to accelerate the adoption of open source on its platforms and its first investment under this program was WS02, a web services platform company with primary operations in Sri Lanka.
