RIM exits NewBay

Synchronoss Technologies, a Nasdaq-listed mobile company, has acquired NewBay, a provider of cloud services for mobile operators and service providers, from Blackberry phone maker Research In Motion (RIM) for $55.5m in cash.

RIM bought NewBay for around $100m in October 2011 from venture capital firms.

Venture capital firm Balderton and mutual fund manager Fidelity’s corporate venturing unit Fidelity Growth Partners had backed NewBay, including in a €6.5m ($10m) series B round in March 2008. Balderton, then known as Benchmark Capital Europe, had been the sole institutional investor in NewBay’s €3.2m A round in January 2004.
