Runkeeper, a US-based fitness app provider backed by media company O’Reilly, was acquired by shoe and apparel company Asics for an undisclosed sum on Friday.
Founded in 2008, Runkeeper has developed a smartphone app that generates personalised running routines. Users earn rewards from partner brands for sticking to their workout and can compare their progress to that of their friends.
Runkeeper will continue as a standalone offering, though the two companies will collaborate on physical products with digital tracking features. Asics will also gain access to Runkeeper’s 45 million users.
Runkeeper previously raised $10m in a 2011 series B round led by Spark Capital that included O’Reilly’s corporate venturing arm, O’Reilly AlphaTech Ventures, and investment firm Revolution Ventures.
O’Reilly AphaTech also led Runkeeper’s $1.1m series A round in 2010, which featured LaunchCapital and assorted angel investors. LaunchCapital and several angel investors also contributed $400,000 in seed funding in 2009.
