Scanadu mobilises corporates for $35m series B

US-based medical devices maker Scanadu raised $35m yesterday in a series B round co-led by conglomerate Fosun and internet portal Tencent.

China Broadband Capital, IGlobe Partners, Relay Ventures, Redmile Group, AME Cloud Ventures and Three Leaf Ventures also took part in the round.

Scanadu is working on a range of products that incorporates medical diagnostics capabilities into a smartphone. The company crowdfunded $1.6m for its Scanadu Scout (pictured) two years ago and is currently shipping the product to those backers.

Inspired by Star Trek’s tricorder, the Scanadu Scout is a thumb-sized device that is held against a user’s forehead to scan and measure heart rate, core body temperature, blood oxygenation and blood pressure within seconds, before transferring the data to a smartphone app.

Scanadu has also developed an at-home urine test, which similarly provides a range of health data. Both are investigationals products, and Scanadu is seeking regulatory approval in the US and China.

The company, which has now raised $49.7m in total, closed a $10.5m series A round in 2013 led by Relay Ventures that also featured VegasTechFund and AME Cloud Ventures, after raising $2m in a 2011 seed round backed by angel investors.
