SG Biofuels fuels up with $17m

Life Technologies Corporation and Flint Hills Resources-backed biodiesel crop company SG Biofuels raised $17m in January.

Life Technologies Corporation, a Nasdaq-listed healthcare research company, and Flint Hills Resources, a US refining and chemicals company owned by Koch Industries, were joined in the series B round on January 17 by venture firm Thomas, McNerney & Partners, which led the financing, as well as Finistere Ventures.

Life Technologies Corporation and Flint Hills Resources helped the company raise its $9.4m series A round, together with undisclosed existing investors.

At the time of the series A, Anthony Sementelli, chief financial officer of Flint Hills Resources, and Nathan Wood, vice president of Life Technologies’ genomics technologies division, have joined SG’s board.

As part of the series B round Pratik Shah, partner at Thomas, McNerney, and Jerry Caulder, managing director for Finistere Ventures, joined the company’s board of directors.
