Industrial technology manufacturer Siemens is set to acquire US-based edge computing platform developer Pixeom for an undisclosed sum, allowing semiconductor technology provider Intel, electronics producer Samsung and energy supplier National Grid to exit.
Pixeom has created edge computing technology that helps cloud software providers develop, monetise and launch containerised IT applications. It will be incorporated into Siemens’ Industrial Edge activities.
Intel and National Grid co-led a $15m round for the company in April 2019 through corporate venturing subsidiaries Intel Capital and National Grid Partners, with Samsung’s Catalyst Fund being identified as an existing investor.
Ralf-Michael Franke, CEO of Siemens’ Factory Automation unit, said: “Cutting edge technologies such as edge computing open up new scope for automation. With Siemens Industrial Edge, we are creating an open edge ecosystem which offers benefits for companies of any size.”
