Signal Sciences picks up $35m

Media group O’Reilly has taken part in a $35m series C round for US-based web application security technology developer Signal Sciences, increasing its overall funding to $61.7m.

Growth equity firm Lead Edge Capital led the round, which included venture capital firms CRV, Harrison Metal and Index Ventures. O’Reilly participated through its corporate venturing arm, O’Reilly AlphaTech Ventures (OATV).

Lorrie Norrington, an operating partner at Lead Edge Capital, has joined Signal’s board of directors in conjunction with the round.

Founded in 2014, Signal Sciences has developed a software platform that protects web applications from cyber attacks such as denial of service, SQL injection and account takeovers.

The company’s software incorporates a web application firewall that sits inside a client’s web servers, monitoring traffic and automatically blocking threats to applications.

Signal Sciences closed a $15m series B round in May 2017 led by CRV and backed by OATV, Harrison Metal and Index Ventures. The latter firm had led its $9.7m series A the year befoe, two years after OATV and Harrison Metal co-led its $2m seed round in 2014.

Andrew Peterson, CEO of Signal Sciences, said: “We are doubling down on engineering innovation and partnerships to deliver maximum security value for our customers as well as expanding key areas of our business to drive continued growth. This will be a massive year for Signal Sciences.”
