Mark Smith, an executive director at US-based telecommunications firm Verizon’s corporate venturing arm, Verizon Ventures, has stepped down from his position.
Verizon Ventures typically invests in seed to late-stage companies developing products, services and technologies that can complement or leverage its parent Verizon’s telecoms business.
Smith joined the unit in 2007 and was one of GCV’s Rising Stars in 2017 having been involved in more than two dozen deals during his time at Verizon Ventures. His relationship with Verizon dates to 1995, when he joined its predecessor company Bell Atlantic.
Smith’s recent investments prior to his departure included a $10m series A round for data analytics software producer OmniSci (then known as MapD) in April 2016, a $6.7m series A for smart building technology developer Verdigris six months later and a $15m series C for digital media and e-commerce company Brit + Co in May 2017.
Smith declined to comment on his next move.
