Sparta Science, a US-based athletic fitness evaluation startup backed by mobile semiconductor producer Qualcomm, raised $7m on Wednesday in a series A round led by venture capital fund Playground Global.
Sparta has developed a software platform that utilises data technology to allow users to quickly scan athletic performance and resilience in order to assess factors such as fitness, individual strengths and weaknesses, and the risk of injury.
The company’s clients include basketball franchise the Cleveland Cavaliers, American football team the San Francisco 49ers and Rutgers University. It will use the funding to further develop the platform as it looks to expand into the clinical health sector.
Qualcomm’s corporate venturing unit, Qualcomm Ventures, participated in Sparta’s $2.7m seed round in January 2017, investing together with Fyrfly Ventures, Spider Capital and XSeed Capital.
Phil Wagner, Sparta’s founder and CEO, said: “As we look to grow our team and expand Sparta’s impact beyond the sports world, we appreciate the support of partners like Playground Global, who also envision a future where data-supported software gives context to hardware measurements in improving people’s lives.”
