US-based online payment services provider Square secured an undisclosed amount of capital on Tuesday for Square Capital, its small business financing initiative.
Asset management firm Victory Park Capital, already an investor in Square Capital, tripled its original investment, while additional funding came from backers including investment management firm Colchis Capital.
Square did not reveal how much it has raised for the fund, stating only that it would enable the company to advance hundreds of millions of dollars to small businesses this year.
Square Capital invests a lump sum in each business in return for a set amount of their future card sales, and uses risk modelling and machine learning to make the financing process more efficient.
Square supplies merchant aggregation and payment services to online sellers. It has raised about $590m in debt and equity from investors including Citi Ventures, the venture capital arm of financial services firm Citi, coffee chain Starbucks and payment services company Visa, since it was founded in 2008.
