GameSalad, a US-based software company to allow people to create their own games for mobile devices formerly known as Gendai Games, has raised $6.1m in its series A round led by Steamboat Ventures, media group Disney’s corporate venturing division.
Venture capital firms Greycroft Partners, DFJ and ff Asset Management also invested in the round. Beau Laskey, managing director at Steamboat Ventures, has joined GameSalad’s board alongside existing director Blair Garrou from DFJ Mercury, who led the company’s initial seed round, and Dana Settle, partner at Greycroft Partners, joins as a board observer.
Laskey said: "GameSalad’s disruptive technology is creating an entirely new set of opportunities for game enthusiasts. By putting powerful creative tools in the hands of anyone who wants to make games, GameSalad is changing the way people interact with entertainment."
Founded in 2007, GameSalad is the largest game development tool for Apple’s iOS devices and its free-to-use, drag-and-drop game creation platform has been used to create more than 8,500 games, including more than 30 top 100 US Games in Apple’s App Store.
In July GameSalad, then known as Gendai, raised an undisclosed amount for its series A round from a venture consortium including media group Disney’s corporate venturing division.
