Solexel, a US-based solar cell and module manufacturer backed by solar installer Sunpower, has secured $31m in series D funding, Greentech Media reported on Monday.
Although Sunpower did not reinvest in the latest round, it did include funding from roofing materials producer GAF and existing investors such as semiconductor technology producer Spirox, Kleiner Perkins Caufield & Byers, Technology Partners, DAG Ventures, Gentry Ventures, Northgate Capital, GSV Capital and Jasper Ridge Partners.
Solexel is developing high-efficiency solar cells that would use almost 10 times less silicon than conventional cells.
The company has now raised more than $200m in funding since it was founded in 2005, including $54.7m from a funding round that closed in August 2013.
