Global Corporate Venturing’s annual survey of investors is a unique snapshot of the industry across sectors and geographies. The full results will be published in the World of Corporate Venturing report at the GCVI Summit in Monterey, California, on 29-30 January.
Here are our 150 respondents’ thoughts on technology trends over the past three years in three charts.
Artificial intelligence (AI) and machine learning (ML), blockchain technology, big data, cybersecurity and financial technology shone on many investors’ eyes as the biggest opportunities for 2019, according to the 2018 survey asking them to look forward.
Responses from the 2019 survey corroborated those findings: the five areas were among the top technology trends for 2019, along with other emerging and promising fields like quantum computing, ML, agriculture tech (agtech) and the internet of things (IoT).
When we compare these responses with the deals made during 2019, the areas mentioned in the survey do appear to march some of the hottest investment verticals and horizontals.
But entertainment, oncology and travel were not mentioned by survey respondents, even though they were actually among the leading areas by number of corporate-backed deals.
