US-based gaming voice app developer Discord has secured approximately $20m in funding from investors including internet company Tencent, VentureBeat has reported.
Venture capital firm Greylock Partners led the round, which included Tencent, incubator YouWeb and VC firm Benchmark.
The company was originally founded as game developer Hammer & Chisel in 2012, but pivoted two years later to concentrate on its Discord voice technology, making it publicly available in May 2015.
Discord has since attracted more than three million users, and claims that around one million users are now signing up for the app each month.
Under its original moniker of Phoenix Guild, Discord raised $1.1m in a 2011 seed round backed by YouWeb, Accel Partners and General Catalyst Partners, before renaming itself Hammer & Chisel.
The company secured $8.2m in a 2013 series A round led by Benchmark Capital that included media group Time Warner, media and data firm International Data Group, Studio 9+, Accel Partners and GC Capital Partners.
Tencent, Benchmark and Studio 9+ then provided an undisclosed amount for Hammer & Chisel in a February 2015 round.
