Tengelmann Ventures, the corporate venturing unit of retail group Tengelmann, has backed the respective series A rounds of incubator Rocket Internet’s Germany-baased grocery startups ShopWings and Bonativo.
ShopWings, which launched in October 2014, secured €12m ($13.6m) from Tengelmann as well as Rocket Internet and other, unnamed investors.
Customers in Berlin, Munich and Sydney, Australia can shop on the company’s online platform for groceries at a range of local supermarkets. ShopWings’ employees will then buy and deliver the groceries to the customer within two hours.
Bonativo received $3.6m from Tengelmann and Rocket Internet. The online farmers’ market enables consumers in Berlin and London, UK to select regional produce such as vegetables, fish or cheese, online and have it delivered to them.
Christian Winter, chief executive of Tengelmann Ventures, said: “We are at the fore of a strong and promising trend which we have observed for a few years now. Groceries will increasingly dominate online retail. There is a lot of scope for growth.
“With ShopWings and Bonativo we are investing in two new business models which have high potential to benefit their customers.”
