Timehop is money for O’Reilly

Timehop, a US-based startup which chronicles a user’s digital content to present them with daily e-mail reminder of their past, secured $1.1m in seed funding on Wednesday. The round was led O’Reilly AlphaTech Ventures (OATV), the corporate venturing unit belonging to technology publishing company O’Reilly Media.

Joining OATV in the round were venture capital fund Spark Capital and a number of angel investors including founders Dennis Crowley and Naveen Selvadurai, founders of mobile social networking site FourSquare.

Timehop was formed during a FourSquare hackathon event in February last year, under the name of 4Squareand7YearsAgo, and also counts seed investment program TechStars among its backers.

The service provided by Timehop works by tracing back a subscriber’s digital footprints and recreating them as a content-based email.

Jonathan Wegener, founder of Timehop, said: "In a world focused on real time, there’s an untapped opportunity in the past. The content people create tells their life story, but so far it remains disaggregated and siloed across devices and services. Timehop is a powerful product that brings together all your content into a single re-experience moment."
