Game development platform developer Unity has agreed to acquire Parsec, a US-based remote desktop technology provider backed by computing technology provider HP, for about $320m in cash.
Founded in 2016, Parsec provides high-speed remote desktop software that helps teams remotely work on creative projects such as video games from different locations. It caters to operating systems including Windows, Mac, Linux and Android as well as on the web.
The company had closed a $25m series B round in December 2020 led by Andreessen Horowitz and backed by returning investors including Makers Fund, Lerer Hippeau, NextView Ventures and Notation Capital.
HP’s corporate venturing subsidiary, HP Tech Ventures, had joined the latter three to take part in a $7m series A round seven months before led by Makers Fund.
Marc Whitten, general manager of create solutions for Unity, said: “In the past year, companies and their employees have been collaborating and working together in fundamentally different ways.
“With the workplace becoming more flexible, teams expanding and collaborating across multiple locations and creators leveraging a myriad of new devices, it’s clear that the creative process will evolve from on premise devices to flexible and cost-effective cloud architectures.
“Parsec has addressed the unique requirements to support this type of high-performance processing no matter where creators are, showcasing technology that is both highly innovative and prescient. We believe Parsec is a rocket ship and we’re very excited to support their future growth.”
