Vicarious commissions $50m series C

Vicarious, a US-based artificial intelligence (AI) technology developer backed by several corporate investors, raised $50m in a series C round on Tuesday led by venture capital firm Khosla Ventures.

Founded in 2010, Vicarious is working on artificial intelligence for robots, using insights from fields such as neuroscience to create machines capable of responding to new environments without requiring retraining.

The company secured an undisclosed sum from electronics manufacturer Samsung and IT services provider Wipro in 2015, with each injecting less than $20m according to a statement by Vicarious co-founder Scott Phoenix.

Power control and automation technology producer ABB took part in a $12m round alongside unnamed backers through its investment arm, ABB Technology Ventures, in 2014.

Vicarious had previously received a total of $56m in funding from backers including Formation 8, Good Ventures, Felicis Ventures, OS Fund, Zarco Group Open Field Capital, Data Collective, Initialized Capital, Founders Fund and angel investors such Mark Zuckerberg, Elon Musk and Ashton Kutcher.

The other participants in the series C round were not revealed. Sven Strohband, chief technology officer at Khosla Ventures, will join Vicarious’ board of directors.
