Voke scores $12.6m in Intel-led round

US-based virtual reality (VR) technology developer Voke has raised $12.6m in funding, according to a regulatory filing, and the company confirmed to GeekWire that chipmaker Intel led the round.

Intel, which invested through its Intel Capital subsidiary, was joined in the round by cable television network A&E, NBA basketball team the Sacramento Kings and venture capital firm Nautilus Ventures.

Voke uses VR technology to synchronise mobile devices, computers and headsets in order to offer viewers fully immersive coverage of live music and sporting events.

The events can be streamed in 3D through VR devices, or in 2D through mobiles, tablets and TVs. Viewers can switch between multiple seating options, view scoreboards and player statistics, as well as pause and rewind coverage.

The company, which has partnerships in place with the Kings and NFL football team Jacksonville Jaguars, will use part of the funding to add more premier sports to its distribution list.

Voke had raised approximately $56m in funding between 2008 and October 2014, according to regulatory filings. The company, previously known as 3D-4U, has not publicly disclosed details of those earlier rounds or the investors that provided the capital.
