Finland-based games developer Next Game has secured a $6m series A funding round co-led by the company’s original investor, Jari Ovaskainen, and IDG Ventures, the corporate venturing arm of IT media company IDG.
Other investors in the round include Lowercase Capital, York Ventures, a recently established early-stage venture capital firm backed by the Gores brothers, Alec, Tom and Sam, and managed by Peter Levin, a digital media entrepreneur and AMC Networks and IDG Capital
Next Games is developing a mobile game based on AMC’s zombie-themed TV drama, ‘The Walking Dead’. The game will have a global release and is due to launch in concert with season 5 of the show when it premieres, though a broadcast date for the season has not been scheduled.
Teemu Huuhtanen, CEO of Next Games, said: “Our funding was made possible by the pioneering work of Scandinavian game development studies. It is a testament to the talent in the Nordic region where many of the most successful games in recent years have been created.”
In a supporting statement commenting on the funding round investor Ovaskainen added: “I’m thrilled to see a Finnish game studio with such talent and vision hit the runway with this dynamic range of global investors.”
