Weekly corporate venturing deal net: 13-17 July 2015

Workspot, the US-based developer of a virtual desktop system for workers, has raised $5m in a series B round led by Helion Ventures that also featured Qualcomm Ventures, the corporate venturing unit of wireless technology provider Qualcomm, and Translink Capital, TechCrunch reported yesterday. The same three investors funded Workspot’s $6.5m series A round in July 2014, which was closed 14 months after a $1.9m seed round featuring Norwest Venture Partners, Kleiner Perkins Caufield & Byers, Redpoint Ventures and various angel investors.

Industrial thermal technology manufacturer Thermax has paid an undisclosed amount for a 33% stake in India-based alternative energy technology developer First Energy, the Business Standard reported on Wednesday. Thermax reportedly plans to wholly acquire First Energy, which produces micro-gasification and biomass-fuelled stoves, over a four-to-six year period.

MassMutual Ventures, the corporate venturing arm of insurer MassMutual, led a $4m series A round raised by Picwell, the US-based developer of a predictive recommendation engine for healthcare plans, on Tuesday. The round, which also featured Osage University Partners and several angel investors, will support product development and an expansion of Picwell’s operations.

Restaurant group Union Square Hospitality Group and growth equity firm Alliance Consumer Growth invested an undisclosed amount in US-based sustainable restaurant chain Tender Greens on Wednesday in return for minority stakes. Tender Greens has opened 22 locations across the state of California.

US-based population health management startup Welkin Health closed a $2m seed round on Tuesday that included preventive healthcare services group iKang Healthcare and medical researcher Mayo Clinic, as well as Rock Health, Asset Management Ventures, Great Oaks VC and iSeed VC. Welkin will use the cash to expand its care coordination platform to include chronic disease care for hypertension, chronic obstructive pulmonary disease and congestive heart failure.

ClassWallet, the US-based developer of an online platform for the tracking and disbursement of school funds, closed a $1.9m seed round on Monday featuring Kaplan Ventures, the investment arm of educational services provider Kaplan, NewSchools Venture Seed Fund, Accelerated Growth Partners, MaverixLab and a host of angel investors. The startup, also a graduate of the Kaplan EdTech Accelerator, previously raised $630,000 in funding from backers including Accelerated Growth Partners and MaverixLab.

US-based in-home technology support service Eden raised $1.3m on Tuesday in a seed round backed by Comcast Ventures, cable and telecommunications service Comcast’s corporate venturing unit. The round also included Canvas Venture Fund, Eniac Ventures, Maven Ventures, Y Combinator, and angel investors Dylan Smith and James Beshara, and will fund Eden’s expansion from its San Francisco Bay Area base by the end of 2015.

US-based housemate matching service Room.me raised $1.1m in seed funding on Tuesday from Axel Springer Plug and Play, the early-stage investment arm of media company Axel Springer, venture capital firm Grazia Equity Partners and an international pool of business angels. Room.me uses an algorithm to help match compatible housemates to help shorten the housemate-finding process.
