Weekly corporate venturing deal net: 25-29 July 2016

Weidong Cloud Education, an online education aggregator and purchasing platform spun out of conglomerate Weidong Group, has raised an undisclosed amount in a round led by CCB International, the investment services flagship for financial services firm China Construction Bank Corporation, China Money Network reported yesterday. The round valued Weidong Cloud Education at $600m, according to Chinese media reports.

US-based influencer-focused marketing platform developer Influential raised $5m in series A funding on Tuesday from investors including entertainment agency Paradigm Talent Agency, music content delivery company MSMCi, ROAR, Europlay Capital Advisors and Ace Fund. The round increased Influential’s overall funding to $9m and will be used to beef up the company’s developer, data scientist and data partner teams.

Abeja, a Japan-based developer of data analytics software for retailers, has received ¥530m ($5m) in series B funding from Innovation Network Corporation of Japan and Archetype Ventures, The Bridge reported on Wednesday. The startup raised an undisclosed sum from NTT Docomo Ventures, the corporate venturing arm of mobile network operator NTT Docomo, IT services firm Sakura Internet, Inspire, Mitsubishi UFJ Capital and Mizuho Capital in 2014 before Salesforce Ventures added a six-figure sum in December the same year.

Investment firm Marlin Equity Partners provided an undisclosed amount of funding on Tuesday for Tidemark, a US-based enterprise performance management software provider backed by enterprise software producer Workday, on Tuesday. Tidemark had raised a total of about $105m from investors also including Greylock Partners, Andreessen Horowitz, Redpoint Ventures, Tenaya Capital and Silicon Valley Bank, as of June 2015.

Spain-based online cycling product retailer Deporvillage has secured €3.5m ($3.9m) in a round featuring media company Mediaset, Expansion has reported. The round included venture capital firms P101, Samaipata Ventures and Cabiedes & Partners, and angel investors Hugo Arevalo, Fabrice Grinda and José Marín. Deporvillage has raised approximately €10m in total, its earlier funding coming from investors including Mediaset’s Ad4Ventures unit, Cabiedes and P101.

US-based cinematic virtual reality technology startup Kite & Lightning received $2.5m on Tuesday in a seed round that included mass media group Comcast’s Comcast Ventures Catalyst Fund. Raine Ventures, the VC division of boutique merchant bank Raine Group, led the round while Social Capital, Outpost Capital, Boost VC and angel investor Jason Rosenthal also participated.

Mozio, the US-based developer of an app that coordinates ground travel to and from airports, has secured $2.5m from investors including public transport operator Veolia Transdev and JetBlue Technology Ventures, the corporate venture capital subsidiary of aviation company JetBlue Airways, Tnooz reported on Wednesday. The round also included Asset Management Ventures, OSFund, Corigin Ventures, Techstars Ventures, Galvanize, Howzat Partners, Plug and Play Technology Ventures and Summit Adventure Fund, and took Mozio’s total funding to $3.3m.

E27, a Singapore-based financial media company that includes multi-corporate VC fund B Dash Ventures, has received S$3m ($2.2m) from TechTemple Group, Linear Venture, Convergence Ventures, Venturecraft and Spacemob, TechCrunch reported on Tuesday. E27 had previously raised approximately $1.3m from B Dash, Pinehurst Advisors, Ardent Capital, 8capita Partners and Dan Neary.

Spectee, the Japan-based artificially curated news app developer formerly known as Euclid Lab, has secured an undisclosed amount in a series A round led by Fuji Startup Ventures, the corporate venturing vehicle for media company and Spectee strategic partner Fuji TV, The Bridge reported on Tuesday. Electronic surveillance technology provider CBC and Mizuho Capital also participated in the round.

Blogfoster, a Germany-based influencer marketing services provider, has raised €1m ($1.1m) from media company Axel Springer’s Plug and Play unit, Yabeo Capital and IBB Beteiligungsgesellschaft, according to Deutsche Startups. The funding will be used to almost double the size of the startup’s team to 35 before the end of the year as it looks to expand geographically beginning with the rest of Europe.

LawnGuru, the US-based operator of an online marketplace for lawn and garden services, secured $1m on Monday in a seed round featuring gas engine producer Briggs and Stratton. VC firm Sierra Wasatch Capital led the round, investing alongside Canyon Creek Capital and Sequoia Capital’s scout program, and the funding will be used to grow LawnGuru’s sales, customer service and marketing teams.

Canada-based mobile wallet developer Koho Financial has raised an undisclosed amount in a funding round led by a strategic investment from financial services holding company Power Financial Corporation. The round also featured angel investors Rashay Jethalal, Adam Felesky, Scott Lake and David Tedman, and followed $1m from Ferst Capital, Hedgewood, Highline, Stanley Park Ventures and Joe Canavan in May 2015.

Modulated Imaging, a US-based developer of light-based imaging systems, has received $500,000 in seed financing from Photonics Management Corporation, a subsidiary of Japan-headquartered optics technology producer Hamamatsu Photonics. Cove Fund, a technology transfer fund for University of California, Irvine, led the round, which represents Modulate’s first external funding barring $8m in research grants from US state institutions National Institutes of Health and Department of Defense.
