Weekly corporate venturing deal net: 25-29 May 2015

Intel Capital, the corporate venturing arm of semiconductor technology manufacturer Intel, has invested an undisclosed amount in Digital Specialty Chemicals (DSC), a Canada-based provider of advanced materials for the semiconductor, pharmaceutical and specialty chemical industries. DSC, which was founded in 1987, will use the money to upgrade its research and development capabilities and expand its manufacturing capacity.

Telecommunications company TeliaSonera has paid an undisclosed sum to acquire a 30% share of Sweden-based cloud and internet of things service provider Springworks. The funding will be used to enhance Springworks’ services, and the company also intends to access TeliaSonera’s global network of partners and customers.

Industrial product and home appliance maker Siemens invested an undisclosed amount in US-based cybersecurity startup CyberFlow Analytics on Wednesday through its corporate venturing unit. Although CyberFlow did not reveal the amount invested by Siemens, Xconomy reported that the company has raised a total of $4m in seed funding from Siemens, electronics producer Toshiba America Electronic Components, which invested in 2013, and undisclosed angel investors.

Xiaoyu Zaijia, the Japan-based creator of a robotic communication device, has raised “millions of dollars” in series B funding from contract manufacturer Foxconn, Chengwei Capital, Innovation Works and Lightspeed China Partners, QQTech reported on Tuesday. The startup had already raised RMB 1.4m ($230,000) on crowdfunding site JD Coufenzi.

User Local, a Japan-based provider of data analysis services to websites, has raised ¥260m ($2.1m) from YJ Capital, the corporate venturing subsidiary of internet company Yahoo Japan, and venture capital firm East Ventures, Tech in Asia reported on Monday. The cash will be used to upgrade User Local’s backend infrastructure and to develop analysis tools for vertical markets.

Flat4Day, a Turkey-based holiday accommodation rental service, secured $2m yesterday in a round led by holiday rental home company HomeAway that also included VC fund 212. The company, which lists almost 30,000 properties across Turkey, Southern Europe and the Middle East, has now raised about $6m in total.

NewsWhip, the Ireland-based developer of a platform that monitors which news stories are being discussed on social networks, raised more than $1.6m yesterday from media company The Associated Press, 500 Startups, Tribal.vc, Matter.vc, Social Starts and SaaS Syndicate. The funding, which follows $1.1m raised in 2013 from investors including AIB Seed Capital Fund and Enterprise Ireland, will be used to build the next iteration of NewsWhip’s technology and expand its US-based development team.

Diversified conglomerate Mitsui invested an undisclosed amount in Canada-based agriculture and data management technology developer Farmer’s Edge on Wednesday. Farmer’s Edge previously received funding from VC firm Kleiner Perkins Caufield & Byers in November 2014.

Astarc Ventures, the seed fund subsidiary of auto parts supplier Astarc, has invested Rs 60m ($940,000) in JBR Interio Technologies, the India-based creator of an automated platform for interior design, the Economic Times reported on Monday. JBL Interio, which had previously raised Rs 100m from real estate financial services platform Brick Eagle, plans to launch its platform in June this year.

Tsepak Technologies, the India-based parent company of business-to-customer instant messaging app GoodBox, has raised $200,000 in a seed round led by Manipal Media Networks, a subsidiary of diversified conglomerate Manipal Group, Inc42 reported on Tuesday. The funding will be used for product development.

Qiwi Venture, the corporate venturing unit of payment services firm Qiwi Group, has agreed to invest about $150,000 in Russia-based mobile banking app developer Krawlly and will take a stake sized between 8% and 13%, according to Firrma. Users of Krawlly’s app, AnyBalance, will also be able to make payments using Qiwi’s Visa QIWI Wallet.

TIM Ventures, the corporate venturing subsidiary of telecommunications company Telecom Italia, invested €100,000 ($110,000) in Italy-based cybersecurity startup Unfraud on Monday. Unfraud intends to use the cash to scale its operations.
