Upthere, a US-based personal storage service provider backed by corporates including telecoms firm NTT Docomo, was acquired by storage equipment producer Western Digital for an undisclosed sum on Monday.
Upthere operates a cloud storage service for users’ photos, videos, documents and music. The service can be accessed through mobile apps or through the desktop.
The technology and Upthere’s staff will join Western Digital’s Client Solutions unit.
Upthere previously received $77m in funding co-led by Western Digital’s corporate venturing arm Western Digital Ventures and VC firm Kleiner Perkins Caufield & Byers.
The two were joined by GV, the investment arm of conglomerate Alphabet, NTT Docomo’s corporate venturing division NTT Docomo Ventures, Elevation Partners, Floodgate and Square 1 Bank.
Jim Welsh, senior vice-president and general manager of Client Solutions at Western Digital, said: “Upthere is delivering on its mission to transform the personal storage market, and we share their focus on providing consumers more rich and meaningful experiences with their data.
“I am pleased to have Upthere CEO Chris Bourdon join the team as a strategic leader. His extensive software expertise will help accelerate our user experience and cloud services imperatives across all aspects of the Client Solutions business.”
