Consumer electronics producer HTC has paid $10m for a 15% stake in US-based virtual reality platform developer Wevr, TechCrunch reported on Friday.
Wevr operates an open platform for developers to create and publish virtual reality content, and offers a grant programme which awards those developers between $5,000 and $50,000. It has not disclosed previous funding rounds or investors.
HTC’s series B funding will give it access to the platform’s developers, which the two companies hope will translate into content for HTC’s virtual reality headset, Vive.
The headset is expected to launch in November 2015 and forms part of HTC’s plans to diversity its business model away from a focus on smartphone
