WeWork turns gold to Laird in $32m round

US-based superfood producer Laird Superfood has received $32m in funding from investors including WeWork, the work-focused branch of location provider We Company.

Founded in 2015, Laird develops and sells environmentally sustainable products such as hydration solutions, creamers, coconut sugar, coffees and organic mushrooms, which are mixed into drinks and water to provide a natural source of energy.

The company also sells accessories and merchandise such as blenders, mugs, water bottles, branded t-shirts and baseball caps. Proceeds from the round will be used to fund strategic acquisitions and product development, as well to expand its headquarters.

Laird will also make its products available to WeWork members and employees in certain locations in the US. The deal will involve Arik Benzino, WeWork’s managing director for the US, Canada and Israel, joining the company’s board of directors.

Benzino said: “Laird Superfood products give you the fuel you need for a productive life. Their holistic approach to life balance is aligned with our mission and vision here at WeWork.

“We could not be more excited to support this amazing company’s growth and at the same time make their incredible products available to our WeWork members and employees.”

Laird secured approximately $1.5m in an early 2017 crowdfunding campaign that was followed by $3.1m in November the same year, according to regulatory filings. A separate filing indicated it raised a further $4m from 23 unnamed investors in May 2018.
