Whill adds to series A round

US-based Whill, which manufactures high-performance wheelchairs, has secured $11m in a series A funding in a round featuring NTT Docomo Ventures, a corporate venturing subsidiary of telecommunications company NTT Docomo, the Wall Street journal has reported.

The state-run Innovation Network Corporation of Japan, seed fund 500 Startups, Taiwan-based metal stamping company Jochu Technology and Scott McNealy, the co-founder of Sun Microsystems, also participated.

The company sells high-performance wheel chairs, which have the ability to navigate rough terrain and steep incline. The additional funding will be used for production and the unveiling of a lower cost model.

In July, a SEC filing showed the company had raised $6m of its planned $11m

Last month the company raised $35,000 in a Kickstarter campaign.

Whill raised $1.8m in seed funding in 2013 from Itochu Technology Ventures, the corporate venturing arm of corporation Itochu. Mitsubishi UFJ, Vegas Tech Fund, 500 Startups, Sunbridge Global Ventures, Wingle and private investors also took part.
