Thomas Whiteaker, has left a managing partner position at venture capital firm Propel Venture Partners, to join computing technology producer IBM’s corporate venturing unit, IBM Ventures, as partner.
Whiteaker had spent three years at Propel, the VC firm formed in early 2016 to invest in financial technology developers on behalf of financial services firm BBVA, during which time he oversaw investments in Hippo, Kasisto, Outpatient, Taulia and Hoxme.
Whiteaker had previously been an executive director at BBVA’s strategic investment vehicle, BBVA Ventures, which spun out into Propel Venture Partners when the latter was formed, since 2012.
BBVA Ventures had hired Whiteaker following four years at Hartford Ventures, the corporate investment unit for US-based insurer Hartford Financial Services Group. He had previously led investments in e-commerce, security and authentication for Visa Ventures, the corporate VC arm of payment services firm Visa.
IBM Ventures already lists five partners on its website: Wendy Lung, Joe Raffa, Michelle Gonzalez, Christoph Auer-Welsbach and Michael Nathan. Its portfolio includes sales software producer Apttus, precision drug developer Pathway Genomics and blockchain technology provider Digital Asset.
