Wickr wins more funding

Wickr, a US-based secure communication platform developer backed by corporates Juniper Networks, Wargaming and CME Group, has raised $8.75m in new funding, according to a regulatory filing.

The equity financing came from 12 investors and forms part of a round the company aims to close at $13m.

Founded in 2012, Wickr has created a messaging app that uses end-to-end encryption and user verification to enable individuals or businesses to share text and visual information safely and securely. Its most recent innovation is a secure conference calling tool it released last month.

The company has now raised approximately $82m in funding altogether, including $9m in a series A round in early 2014 featuring networking technology producer Juniper Networks, venture capital firm Alsop Louie Partners and non-profit organisation Knight Foundation.

John Breyer led Wickr’s $30m series B as a private investor later the same year, participating alongside game developer Wargaming and exchange operator CME Group as well as Alsop Louie, Knight Foundation and Riverwood.

Wickr secured another $34m in April 2016, according to securities filings. Its investors also include SingTel Innov8, the corporate venturing vehicle for telecom firm Singapore Telecommunications, which likely took part in the 2016 round, though the companies have not confirmed when it invested.
