Wonder Workshop builds $6.9m series B

Wonder Workshop, a US-based educational technology company backed by diversified internet company Google, raised $6.9m in a series B round yesterday.

The round included WI Harper Group, Madrona Venture Group, Charles River Ventures (CRV), Maven Ventures, Bright Success Capital and undisclosed angel investors.

Founded in 2012 as Play-I, Wonder Workshop has developed a range of programmable robots to teach children coding concepts from an early age. It will use the series B funding to support expansion into new markets, and to develop its manufacturing capabilities and strategic business channels.

Madrona and CRV provided $8m of series A funding in March 2014, after Google Ventures, Google’s corporate venturing arm, participated in a $1m seed round in 2013 alongside Madrona and a range of angel investors.

Wonder Workshop secured $1.4m in crowdfunding in December 2013 to support development of its first two robots, Bo and Yana. It has since added two other robots, Dash and Dot (pictured), to its range.

Vikas Gupta, co-founder of Wonder Workshop, said “The response from kids, parents and teachers has been incredible. It is heartening to see Dash, Dot and our apps opening minds to the possibilities in blending coding and hands-on play.

“We continue to build a platform that helps children learn through play, and the additional funding will help us invest even further in content for our community such as new apps, school curricula, weekly challenges, the monthly magazine and more.”
