Xenex Disinfection Services, a US-based developer of light-based technology for hospital room disinfection, secured $25m yesterday in a series B round backed by life sciences company Brandon Point Industries.
Battery Ventures, Targeted Technology Fund II and RK Ventures also participated in the round, the three having previously funded Xenex’s $11.3m series A round in 2013.
Xenex has created a robot that can clean patient rooms, operating theatres, equipment rooms, accident and emergency rooms, intensive care units and public areas without causing disruption.
The company claims its robot can disinfect up to 62 rooms per day. It uses xenon gas, which is more environmentally friendly than toxic mercury or hydrogen peroxide, to create ultraviolet light that directly attacks the DNA of pathogens and stops them from reproducing or mutating.
Xenex will use the funding to support product development, fuel international expansion, and increase the size of its US sales team.
