Zebra looks to profit with Profitect acquisition

Marking, tracking and computer printing technologies producer Zebra Technologies is set to acquire US-based business intelligence software developer Profitect for an undisclosed amount, allowing communications equipment provider Motorola Solutions to exit.

Profitect has built a prescriptive analytics platform aimed at the retail and consumer packaged goods industries, facilitating tasks such as maintaining inventory and pricing accuracy, identifying unsellable merchandise and detecting assortment discrepancies.

Zebra will use Profitect’s technology and staff to accelerate the development of its business intelligence tool, Savanna. The deal is subject to customary closing conditions and is expected to be completed by the end of next month.

Profitect had raised at least $14.4m in equity funding according to press reports and securities filings. Zebra Technologies has been an investor for approximately five years, through corporate venturing subsidiary Zebra Ventures, though further details could not be ascertained.

Motorola Solutions Venture Capital, the corporate venturing vehicle for Motorola Solutions, injected an undisclosed sum in the company in 2014. Its other shareholders include Genesis Partners and Cedar Fund.
