Zephyr Technologies acquisition sets hearts racing

Healthcare product provider Covidien has acquired US-based wearable medical technology producer Zephyr Technology, according to Mobile Health News, creating exits for corporate venturing units Motorola Solutions Venture Capital and 3M New Ventures. Terms of the deal were not disclosed.

Communications hardware maker Motorola Solutions participated in Zephyr’s $2m series B round in July 2009.

Diversified manufacturer 3M invested in a $8.9m series C in 2012 round that featured Motorola Solutions and Alsop Louie Partners. The total funding raised by Zephyr since it was founded in 2003 is $13.3m.

Zephyr creates wearable medical technology such as the BioHarness wearable chest strap, and BioPatch, a “band aid” style sensor, both of which can monitor heart and breathing rates, and other vital signs.

The company has received multiple contracts from the US government that have helped in the development and validation of its technology, as well as its application in challening operating environments.
