10gen adds three strategics

10gen, a US-based database provider, has gained an undisclosed from strategic investors.

Intel Capital, the corporate venturing unit of the eponymous chip maker, said it was its first investment in the NoSQL database market and Red Hat, a provider of open source software, made the strategic investment as part of its existing collaboration with 10gen. The third strategic investor was In-Q-Tel (IQT), the quasi-corporate venturing unit on behalf of the US government’s intelligence agencies.

The strategic investments followed 10gen’s $42m round that closed in May from venture capital firms New Enterprise Associates, Sequoia Capital, Flybridge Capital Partners and Union Square Ventures and which took the total raised since its launch to more than $73m.

Lisa Lambert, vice-president of Intel Capital and managing director of the software and services sector, said: “The NoSQL marketplace has gone through a huge transformation from a community driven market to running production systems for some of the world’s largest infrastructures.

“With its agile, scalable technology, 10gen is uniquely positioned to take advantage of growing enterprise demand for a high performance data store. We look forward to collaborating with 10gen and helping accelerate penetration of MongoDB on Intel Architecture across enterprises worldwide.”

Ashesh Badani, general manager of the cloud business unit and OpenShift at Red Hat, added: “Red Hat’s investment in 10gen will enable both companies to accelerate the development and adoption of new data-powered applications running on agile open source technologies designed for hybrid cloud and on-premise environments.

“The combination of MongoDB and Red Hat technologies, including OpenShift, Red Hat’s platform-as-a-service, gives developers and IT [information technology] professionals the tools they need to deploy next generation applications in the cloud.”

Robert Ames, vice-president of information and communication technologies at IQT, said: “The ability to store and query both unstructured and structured data with performance at scale makes MongoDB an important addition to our strategic investment portfolio.

“MongoDB is built to leverage big data and holds great promise for the development of new storage and processing capabilities.”

10gen said it would use the funds to further invest in product development for the MongoDB database.

Max Schireson, president of 10gen, said: “We look forward to our new relationship with Intel Capital and to collaborating more closely with Red Hat to better enable and support our joint customers with integrated solutions and technologies.”
