Alibaba eyes Lumus potential with $6m investment

Israel-based augmented reality (AR) lens technology manufacturer Lumus has received $6m in funding from e-commerce company Alibaba Group, Israeli daily Calcalist has reported.

Lumus produces optical engine technology that is used in smart eyewear and AR headsets. It has now raised a total of $64m since it was founded in 2000, having closed a $45m series C round last month.

The series C consisted of $15m in a June 2016 tranche led by investment firm Shanda Group and backed by photoelectric display equipment maker Crystal-Optech, and a $30m extension led by laptop manufacturer Quanta Computer that included consumer electronics producer HTC.

Lumus said last month it planned to use the funding to expand the development, operations and marketing of its core technology.

The company raised $6m from Jerusalem Global Ventures and Vaizra Investments in 2012, following $7m in earlier funding from investors including Motorola Ventures, the corporate venturing unit that later evolved into Motorola Solutions Corporate Ventures.
