Amazon calibrates 2lemetry acquisition

US-based internet of things technology developer 2lemetry has been acquired by e-commerce company Amazon, providing an exit to cloud computing company Salesforce, TechCrunch reported yesterday.

Neither company has disclosed the terms of the deal, confirming only via email that 2lemetry will continue to operate.

2lemetry was founded in 2011 and raised $9m in funding, including $4m in funding from Salesforce’s corporate venturing unit, Salesforce Ventures, and unnamed private investors.

Amazon has not revealed how it plans to use 2lemetry’s technology, but it could be integrated to connect wearables, sensors and devices into its cloud service, AWS, or use the company’s facial recognition technology.

The facial recognition technology was developed for physical stores, where beacons that adapt to shoppers’ age and gender could alert them to offers. Amazon already sells home automation products and has developed an artificial intelligence assistant called Echo.
