Viki takeover translates into another Rakuten mega deal

Japan-based Rakuten, an electronic commerce, internet services and digital media content company, is on an ambitious path to one day go neck and neck with Amazon and Lovefilm subsidiary, Netflix. Its recent acquisition of Singapore-based Viki.com, a crowd-sourcing multi-lingual video streaming company, is likely to give it the global edge it needs to build scale. The Japanese company is reportedly set to pay close to $200m for Viki, according to media sources.

Itochu makes $5m strategic move for Fab

Japanese trading conglomerate Itochu Corporation has become the latest investor in international fashion and lifestyle e-commerce company Fab. The deal follows a prior investment by Itochu Technology Ventures, the corporate venturing unit of Itochu, in the initial $150M Series D kick-off round announced on June 19th.

Samsung lights up to Novaled

Asia electronics group Samsung is looking to gain greater control of the organic light-emitting diode, or OLED, technology as consumers favour thinner screens in smartphones and TV sets. It is hoping to get a piece of that market through a pending acquisition through its affiliate Cheil Industries, also known as Samsung Chemical, of German organic light-emitting diode (OLED) technology developer Novaled.
