BSkyB goes on funding Jaunt alongside Google

US-based virtual reality technology developer Jaunt raised $27.8m yesterday from a series B round featuring participation from Google Ventures, the corporate venturing unit of internet company Google.

UK-based broadcaster BSkyB and venture capital firms Redpoint Ventures and Highland Capital Partners also took part in the round alongside private investors Peter Gotcher and Blake Krikorian.

Jaunt creates software, tools, hardware and applications for cinematic virtual reality systems. Its technology uses proprietary algorithms and computational photography software to create 3D experiences.

The funding will enable Jaunt to expand both its technology and its team. The company will be able to “build additional cameras and build out the production team, which means we can film and produce more content, and do it on a larger scale,” according to Jaunt  CEO Jens Christensen.

Jaunt raised $6.8m in series A funding from BSkyB, SV Angel and angel investors including Gotycher and Krikorian earlier this year, after BSkyB had contributed to a $350,000 seed round for the company in December 2013.
